This year in our LA class we read a book called The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. This book was really good and always kept us on our feet. After we finished the book we made these 3D books and they could be flipped and we decorated them on how we would creat our own dream ideal world. Here is the story I wrote:
Landing in 3,2,1!” The rocket said. Hi, I’m Maddie and I am 8 years old. My mom and I have been asleep for 356 years, so we better not be tired when we get on Ruse. I have no clue what Ruse will look like. I have imagined it to have nothing on it yet because it’s new, but hopefully it will be very pretty. We start to line up near the door, there are so many people, it feels like I am a bug getting stepped on because everyone is taller than me. The doors open but I can’t see anything. All I see is a little bit of pink light. Everyone is going onto the Ruse. My mom and I make our way to the front, and I see it for the first time!
The air is warm like cookies baking in the oven. The pinkish orange sky glows with the sun as my mom and I walk onto Ruse. It’s so beautiful. The clouds are pink just like the cotton candy I would get at carnivals. There are cool trees all around Ruse, some looking almost looking like palm trees and pine trees. The hills are so uneven and lumpy that they look like a camel’s back. Everyone is looking around, amazed. I think that it was so worth it to wait 356 years for this, it’s going to be amazing!
My mom and I walk around for a little in till on big loud speakers, like the ones at football games, said, “Everyone please report back to the ship.” When my mom and I got back into the ship, we were led into a big room with a movie theater screen, and everyone sat and waited for something to pop up onto the screen. Finally, a video started playing, this video was about the solar system and where we are because no one that just woke up really knows where we are. “Welcome to Ruse. Ruse is in a solar system with five other planets all revolving around the sun, Shreka. The five planets are Thalia, Ombre, Tranquility, Vita Nova and our planet Ruse. Our comet is called Reese’s comet. It looks like fireworks on the fourth of July when Reese’s comet shoots by Ruse. Thank you for watching this video! Hope to see you around Ruse, Enjoy.” We finish the video and head back to our room and go to bed.
Today is going to be a busy day! As we head back to where we were yesterday, we line up and the doors open. We walk onto Ruse the warm air hits me again. My mom and I walked around for a little bit. We get to a gigantic waterfall and the water is turquoise and clear. This water is apparently drinking clean, so my mom and I bend down and try the water, it tastes like chilled Gatorade, it’s delicious! The rocks on the waterfall are not really rocks, they are bright glowing crystals that are surrounding the waterfall. The crystals glow just like my night light when I would sleep in my room back on earth. Speaking of sleeping, the days here are 30 hours! And years are 395 days. This is sure going to be a long year.
Here on Ruse the government system is that everyone from birth to death has enough money to support themselves. There are no wars here either. This is the stuff that I learned about Ruse today. My mom and I really like it here on Ruse, we walk around again for a long time, it feels like the walks in the park that we would always take. We find very colorful flying animals that almost look like butterflies, but they are a little bit bigger. Their color is like the rainbow lollipops I would get after the doctors.
The bright sun goes down and it gets chilly, it feels like the cold ice cream store. We see a couple of the butterfly looking things and they glow like fireflies in the summer night, they are so beautiful. We head back into the ship and look out of our window and see a big star shoot by. “If you just saw that, it was Reese’s comet. That comet will shoot by Ruse every 5 months. So, it’s not too rare but it’s very pretty.” said the big speakers. Reese’s comet looked almost purple, but I couldn’t get a good look because it was going as fast as the car when we would drive on the highway, so basically 70 mph. Well now we need to go to bed, so I shut my eyes and fall asleep wondering what else I will find on Ruse.
I wake up and realize that all of that was a dream. I wish it was real, Ruse sounds so much cooler than earth. I go outside and look up at the sky, in the distance I see a pinkish purple planet. Is it…? I run inside and tell my mom and we go back outside; it’s gone. But I still tell my mom all about Ruse and how cool it was.
Did you like it? Well here is my book with that story glued into it:

This blog is by Reese and Louisa. This year, we had a special guest visit us in Horton Hall, Adam Gidwitz. He came to talk to us and some of Duke School about his books. He talked about all of his books and gave us previews of some of his books. He told us about the series, A Tale Dark and Grimm, the book Max in the House of Spies and a lot of other books that sounded amazing! He told us about what it is like to be an author. He also talked about his journey of becoming an author. His story was inspiring and we had a lot of fun and we hope to have him back soon! Here are some photos of his visit!

We are excited to read some of his books!
This blog was written by Louisa and Reese. In April, the 6th grade went to the More Head Planetarium. Once we all got to school, we loaded up onto the buses. On the bus ride there, we talked with friends and got excited for the planetarium. Then, when we got there, we walked around the UNC campus and learned about some things at UNC. Then, we sat down and ate lunch. After we ate lunch, we were free to explore the Planetarium. We had so much fun exploring the planetarium, and checking out all the cool activities. After we explored the planetarium, the two groups split up. One of the groups went to watch an interesting movie about the Mars Expedition. The screen went all the way around the sphere like room, so it looked like we were looking up into space. We learned so much about space and the future expedition to Mars. We learned that the people who will be going to Mars and working on that project are in school right now so it could be any of us. We learned how people go to space, what they pack, some missions they have to do in space, problems and concerns in space, and all the roles you can be in to work with NASA! After we got some questions answered, the next group came in to watch the same thing as the first group. Once the second group came in to watch the Mars movie, the first group went into another room. In this room, there were so many cool props sitting on the tables. We watched as a scientist used all of these props in experiments and told us about them.We learned about mass, electricity, force, and so much more by watching these experiments. After we finished, we loaded back onto the buses. This was such a fun field trip and we learned so much! Here are some photos from the planetarium visit!

This weekend I went to Maryland with my mom and my lacrosse team, 91. We were all so excited because if you don’t know NGLL stands for National Girls Lacrosse League so one team from each nation would have to qualify and then all the winners would advance to nationals.

So a couple weeks before we had our qualifier, we won all 3 games, yay! So back to Maryland, my mom and I got there around 6PM and only a couple of my teammates were there so we all just hung out in the hotel. But when everyone got here it was really late so we all hung out for only a little bit then went back to our rooms and went to bed. The next day we had an early game at 9 so we got there at 8 to warm up and get ready. It was raining… I hate the rain!!!! Our first game was against Aces who are from New England, we won!! We beat them 10-4 Our next game was at 12 so we had time in between games so we just rested in our tents and trying to stay dry. So it was finally time for our game we warmed up and got started. This was against hero’s, they were good! They’re from MidAtlantic. But in over time our team pulled out the win 9-8! We were really wet! We had our last game we were playing Philly Blast, who were from Philly. Our team did not play the best and we lost but could have won. We lost 6-7 and we were all really pissed at our selves. That was all the games for Saturday so for the rest of the day we went to lunch as a team, think how long that took… so we were there for around 3 hours, long time right! We all headed back to the hotel for the rest of the day. We play hide n’ seek tag, went swimming, played baseball with a baseball team that was staying there too(they were like 8.. but beat us), hung out, and ate Chick-fil-A. After my mom and I went to our room and went to bed. So we woke up the next morning and our game was at 8😩, so we had to get there at 7, early morning all right! We were play the Toronto Beaches from Upstate New York, I thought they were from Canada! We won 13-1!!!! So that meant….. WE MADE IT TO THE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!! YAYAYAY! But we had 3 hours between the games so we watched other games and supported 91-Long Island. It was time, we were playing an undefeated team, their team was called grit Dallas, and they were good. They streamed our games and had commentators. I thought that was so cool. We kept fighting, but that was not enough. They came out with the win 9-6. We lost 😢. In the end we tried our best. For our team we had 3 red cards🤫🫣…, a lot of yellow card ( i don’t think the refs liked our team), 38 goals in total, 8 goals for me, and our team went 3-2. Here are some photos:

A couple of weeks ago the 6th grade class got to go to a development of houses and there was a patch of grass. Our mission was to plant the tree’s so by the time that the people move into the houses there will be beautiful trees to look at from their windows. There were two groups for the field trip. The first group went to the lot and planted the tree’s first, then went back to school and watched a movie about tree’s. Louisa and I were in the first group, so when we got to the lot, it was really muddy because it rained that night. But we watched the instructors and they planted a tree. So after they were done, it was our turn, finally. Louisa and I planted trees together. The first step was to get your shovel and dig a hole about 1 foot deep. Next, we pulled the roots from the trees. Then, we put the tree in the middle of the hole and put the dirt back in. We learned so much about trees, the importance of them, and how to plant them. We had so much fun learning about the trees.
I just started to play field hockey again and currently I am playing for Bull City. I like field hockey because you can play it all year around. For example in the summer, spring, and fall I play outdoor which is on grass or turf, and in the winter I play indoor and that’s on a basketball court or a court like that. Indoor is faster than outdoor but in outdoor the field is bigger. In my experience I like Indoor field hockey better than outdoor because its a smaller field. I hope you can come see me play sometime!
For the past couple of weeks in Science class we have been learning about planets and moons. I have been studying Luna earth’s moon and everyone in my class has something different. The end goal we were reaching for is to be able to present in front of the class. The steps to that were first we needed to take notes and really get to know our planet or moon. Secondly we needed to sort and collect photos for our slides. Then we needed to make our slides, and lastly we need to make postcards or speaker notes for when we present.
A couple weekends ago my field hockey club, bull city, went to Virginia Beach for national indoor festival. Since it’s the winter and cold outside we play inside on a court. We had two games on Saturday and my team won them both. On Sunday we had two games again, we won them both, yay! Monday was the final day and we had the earliest game ever and we Sadly lost. But that’s ok because we still won! We won because we had more wins than the other team. I had so much fun at this tournament! Some other things I did was walk around, hangout with my team, watch other games, and walk on the beach.

This summer has been so fun but also very sad. This summer I moved and I was really sad, but now I am so happy here. My summer started by having an end of the school year party and I had so much fun because all of my close friends were there. My mom and I went to Ohio for my gymnastics nationals. This was a three day event. The first day we were there we had our orientation and the march in. The second day I watched all of my teammates in different levels. And finally on day three I competed! I started on vault I got a 9.250, next was bars, and I fell so I got a 8.350, my third event was beam and I got a 9.125, and lastly on floor I got my best score, 9.9!!! Almost perfect. I got second all around.

Some other things i did in the summer was hang out with friends, go to the beach and pool, and play lacrosse. Along with lacrosse I had about 4 tournaments, before I moved I played for the CT Grizzlies. I also went to two overnight lacrosse camps, one for Northwestern, the other one is called Bitters. I had so much fun at those! This summer I went to three new states! Nevada, Wyoming, Arizona. In Nevada I went to Las Vegas, it was super fun. There I went to a Maroon 5 and Katy Perry concerts. Some other things my family and I did was swim, walk around, shop, take pictures, and went in all of the hotels (they were all soooo cool!). In Arizona we took a helicopter from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, it was so pretty and cool. Last stop was in Wyoming wh

In LA class for the past few months we have been reading a lot of wisdom tales. So for a final project we got to pick one of the stories that we wanted to tell and make into a comic. I chose Paca and The Beetle. The story starts with the beetle going on a journey and then paca comes along and starts to make fun of him because he thinks that he is so slow and wont get anywhere. The parrot in the tree suggests that they should race and the winner of that race gets a brand new beautiful gold coat. They both agreed so the lined up. The parrot said “READY SET GOOOOO!”, so they paca started to run and the beetle slowly walked along. Paca thought that he had a lot of time so he took a nap and the paca did not know that the beetle could fly so the beetle won the race and the beetle got the beautiful new gold coat. The moral of the story is Be Humble, Don’t Brag, and Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
Here is my comic and what it looks like.
